# App passwords, provider by provider

> What an app password is, and step-by-step instructions to create one for Yahoo, iCloud, AOL, Fastmail, Proton Mail, Zoho and other providers.

## What is an app password?

An app password is a separate password that lets one app, such as ClearMyInbox, read your email without knowing your main account password. Many email providers require one, especially when two-factor authentication is on.

An app password only works for the app you made it for. You can remove it at any time in your email provider's security settings, and your main account is not affected.

<Note>
Gmail and Outlook do not need an app password. You sign in with Google or Microsoft. See [Connect an email account](/connect/overview).
</Note>

## Yahoo Mail

1. Go to [login.yahoo.com/account/security](https://login.yahoo.com/account/security) and sign in.
2. Turn on 2-step verification if it is not already on. Yahoo only offers app passwords when it is on.
3. Scroll to **Generate app password**, choose **Get started**, name it `ClearMyInbox`, then choose **Generate**.
4. Copy the 16-character password (no spaces) and paste it into ClearMyInbox. Yahoo shows it only once.

Yahoo no longer offers sign-in with Yahoo to new apps, so we connect through IMAP with an app password.

## iCloud Mail

1. Go to [appleid.apple.com](https://appleid.apple.com) and sign in with your Apple ID.
2. Choose **Sign-In and Security**, then **App-Specific Passwords**.
3. Choose the **+** button, name it `ClearMyInbox`, then choose **Create**.
4. Copy the password (it looks like `xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx`) and paste it into ClearMyInbox.

This is not your Apple ID password. Apple requires a separate app password for each app. It covers `icloud.com`, `me.com` and `mac.com` addresses.

## AOL Mail

1. Go to [login.aol.com/account/security](https://login.aol.com/account/security).
2. Choose **Generate app password**, select **Other App**, and name it `ClearMyInbox`.
3. Copy the password and paste it into ClearMyInbox.

AOL requires an app password when two-factor authentication is on.

## Fastmail

1. In Fastmail, open **Settings**, then **Privacy & Security**, then **App Passwords** ([direct link](https://app.fastmail.com/settings/security/tokens)).
2. Choose **New App Password**, name it `ClearMyInbox`, and select IMAP access.
3. Copy the password and paste it into ClearMyInbox.

Each app gets its own password. You can remove it from your Fastmail security settings at any time.

## Proton Mail

1. Download and install Proton Mail Bridge from [proton.me/mail/bridge](https://proton.me/mail/bridge).
2. Open Bridge and sign in with your Proton account.
3. In Bridge, choose your account and copy the password shown there. It is not your Proton password.

Proton Mail needs the Bridge app running on your computer. Bridge connects on your own computer (`127.0.0.1`, port `1143`).

## Zoho Mail

1. In Zoho Mail, open **Settings**, then **Mail Accounts**, then **IMAP Access**, and turn it on.
2. Go to [accounts.zoho.com](https://accounts.zoho.com/home#security/security_dashboard), then **Security**, then **App Passwords**.
3. Choose **Generate New Password** and name it `ClearMyInbox`.
4. Copy the password and paste it into ClearMyInbox.

Turn on IMAP access before you create the app password.

## GMX

1. In GMX, open **Settings**, then **POP3/IMAP**, and turn on IMAP access.
2. Use your normal GMX email password in ClearMyInbox.

GMX does not use separate app passwords.

## Mail.com

1. In Mail.com, open **Settings**, then **POP3/IMAP**, and turn on IMAP access.
2. Use your normal Mail.com email password in ClearMyInbox.

Make sure IMAP access is turned on in your Mail.com settings.

## Yandex Mail

1. In Yandex Mail, open **Settings**, then **Email clients**, and turn on access from the `imap.yandex.com` server ([direct link](https://mail.yandex.com/#setup/client)).
2. In Yandex ID, open **Security**, then **App Passwords**, and create a new password ([direct link](https://id.yandex.com/security/app-passwords)).
3. Copy the password and paste it into ClearMyInbox.

Yandex needs IMAP turned on, and an app password when two-factor authentication is on.

## Comcast / Xfinity

1. Go to [login.xfinity.com](https://login.xfinity.com) and sign in.
2. Open **Email Settings**, then **Security**, and allow access from third-party apps.
3. Use your Xfinity account password in ClearMyInbox.

You may need to turn on third-party email access in your Xfinity security settings first.

## AT\&T Mail

1. Go to [att.com](https://www.att.com) and sign in.
2. Open **Profile**, then **Sign-in info**, then **Secure Mail Key**, and choose **Manage**.
3. Choose **Create secure mail key**.
4. Copy the mail key and paste it into ClearMyInbox.

AT\&T uses a "Secure Mail Key" in place of your normal password for other apps.

## My provider is not listed

You can still connect with manual IMAP settings. See [Any other mailbox](/connect/overview#any-other-mailbox-imap).
