# Connect an email account

> How to connect Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo or any IMAP mailbox to ClearMyInbox, and what access each one needs.

You connect a mailbox from the scan page, or later from **Account**, with **Connect another account**.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Enter your email address">
    Type the address and choose **Continue**. We work out who hosts the mailbox from the address.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in, or enter an app password">
    Gmail and Outlook open their own sign-in page. Other providers ask for a password, usually an app password.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start scanning">
    When the mailbox is connected, you can run your first scan.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If we cannot tell who hosts your address (common with a work or custom domain), you are asked **Who hosts your email?** Choose Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or **Somewhere else** to set up IMAP by hand.

## Gmail and Google Workspace

You sign in with Google. We never see your Google password.

* To scan, we ask for **read-only** access to your mail, plus your email address.
* We only ask for permission to change mail later, and only if you use a feature that needs it: deleting a sender's emails, or blocking a sender.

Addresses ending in `gmail.com` or `googlemail.com`, and custom domains hosted by Google, connect this way.

## Outlook, Hotmail, Live and Microsoft 365

You sign in with Microsoft. We never see your Microsoft password.

Microsoft has one permission that covers both reading and changing mail, so we ask for read and write access to your mail when you connect, plus your basic profile.

## Yahoo Mail

Yahoo connects through IMAP with an **app password**. Your normal Yahoo password will not work. See [App passwords](/connect/app-passwords#yahoo-mail).

## Any other mailbox (IMAP)

iCloud, AOL, Fastmail, Proton Mail, Zoho, GMX and most other providers connect through IMAP. IMAP is the standard way for an app to read a mailbox.

For the well-known providers, we fill in the server settings for you and you only enter a password. Many of them need an app password: see [App passwords](/connect/app-passwords).

If your provider is not recognised, enter the settings by hand. You need:

* **Server address**, usually something like `imap.yourprovider.com`;
* **Port**, usually `993`;
* **Password**, your email password, or an app password if your provider offers them.

Search for "IMAP settings" and your provider's name, or ask your IT team for a work mailbox.

## How many mailboxes can I connect?

It depends on your plan: one on Free and Casual, two on a Week Pass, five on Professional. See [pricing](https://www.clearmyinbox.ai/pricing).

## Disconnecting

See [Data and deletion](/data-and-deletion#disconnect-a-mailbox).
